Adult female - unknown Macdonald
A half length portrait, carte de visite, of an unknown adult female seated in front of a tromp l'oeil (an artistic technique using realistic imagery to create an optical illusion) of columns on a settee with her right arm resting on its back and fingers curled at her cheek. Her left hand lightly holds a gathering of her full skirt. Her mid tone, close fitting, long waisted jacket is highly decorated with vertical rows of narrow pleats and darker, possibly velvet trim around the decorative collar, lapels and the cuffs of the fitted 3/4 length sleeves. The same material is used as pompom-like buttons down the front and all is finished off with tightly woven, light toned Chinese-style braid along the left neckline to hang over the pompoms. Her hair is tightly curled on top and caught up behind. A duplicate carte de visite, in fair condition, with a line of brown paper across the reverse top edge.
