122-128 Wallace Street Braidwood
An original black and white photograph of shops in Wallace Street Braidwood, 1981, highlighting Nos. 122 Newsagency and TAB agency; 124-126 Len Mutton & Co, haberdashery (which also appears to be an agent for the Bank of NSW, though the bank itself is just a few doors up) and No. 128 Braidwood Pharmacy, R.J. Boon Chemist (also selling Kodak film). In the 1960s many councils across NSW decided to 'modernise' their country towns by removing the original decorative verandahs. These were replaced by plain looking awnings as seen in this image. The 1990s saw heritage grants being issued to rebuild the verandahs in their original design. See also 'Braidwood Dear Braidwood' Netta Ellis (1989). The creator of this image, John Gellibrand, was an amateur photographer and member of the Braidwood & District Historical Society. An original black and white photograph, in good condition. This photograph is provided for research purposes only and must not be reproduced for other purposes without the prior permission of Braidwood & District Historical Society.
